Manchester born, 90s inspired producer Nik Frattaroli’s latest EP on his own label, Sangoma Music, takes us back deep down into the Basement of House music.
“Under Attack” is a quirky track which almost seems out of place on this EP and more like something you’d find on a Ninja Tunes compilation. Think of it as if Mr. Scruff made House music. Loopy double bass and vocal stabs repeat as the track builds slowly through extra added percussion. There’s loads of groove on this one which would probably appeal to a less selective crowd if played on a dance floor.
“Clear Blue” straight off the bat drops the deep organic bass and vocal sample which repeats gradually dropping out the bass to introduce a new dynamic to the feel of the track. This allows the organ/piano to deliver a new dimension to the overall feeling, giving the track a more soulful approach which once heard makes total sense.
“Rio Padice” takes on remix duties with an updated take on “Clear Blue”. The remix takes us on a percussive journey with a bouncy subbed kick and reverbed claps. If anything this remix brings the track up to date with the ever-so-popular, so-now “bass” sound. Great option to have should your crowd require that updated House sound.
“For Real” is a slower piece compared to the rest but is almost more up tempo. The track climaxes as the classic old school house hi hats drop and the real driving groove begins, definite floor filler.
If this second release on Sangoma is anything to go by we could be in for an interesting Journey into Throwback House with tinges of experimentation.
I’m looking forward to their catalogue of releases.
